How We Support Military-Connected Students

Discovery Peak Charter School is the school of choice for many military-connected families. In fact, nearly half (47%) of our students and staff are military-connected with parents or spouses actively serving or retired from the Army, Air Force, National Guard, Marines, Navy, or Coast Guard. We are a Purple Star school and celebrate April as the Month of the Military Child.

As part of the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District, and the community supporting two military installations, we work closely with our partners:

Georgia Sandgren, FNSBSD Military Student Support Coordinator

Dr. Earnest Kincade, Eielson AFB School Liaison Manager

Fairbanks North Star Borough School District (FNSBSD) is a military-friendly school district. We want to help make your transition in our schools as smooth as possible and provide you with up-to-date information while you are here! With more than 12,400 students and 32 schools in the school district, FNSBSD educates over 2,700 military-connected students, which is 22% of the total student population (current information as of May 2024).

The FNSBSD has a school located on each of the military installations; Arctic Light Elementary (Fort Wainwright: K-5th grade) and Anderson-Crawford Elementary (Eielson AFB: K-5th grade).

The FNSBSD manages three Department of Defense Education Activity (dodea) grants:

  • Tactical Tutoring for Elementary Readers
  • Operation Arctic Algebra Advancement
  • Stealth Sciences

The FNSBSD supports the Child and Youth Behavioral School Military Family Life Counseling (MFLC) program, funded by the Department of Defense, where seven counselors serve five elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools for students, families, and staff.

Twenty-three FNSBSD schools have been awarded the designation of being Purple Star Schools. Purple Star Schools are schools that have shown a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation's military.

For the past five years, the FNSBSD has been awarded the Military Child Education Coalition's LTG (Ret) H.G. "Pete" Taylor Partnership of Excellence Awards:

2020 Andie, the Thunderbird, Mail Service

2021 Readiness (R2): Military Dependent Students are Ready to Learn!

2022 Operation Grow Where You Go: Cultivating Support for Military
              Children, Tweens, and Teens

2023 Month of the Military Child: A Day in the Life ... Activity Fair

2024 PreApprenticeship: Operation Future Force (OFF)

We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our military families, especially our youngest heroes - your children, our students!
